PORTUGAL

Portuguese outlet Observador reporting that in the wake of PM Antonio Costa's resignation amid a corruption probe, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will announce the dissolution of the Assembly of the Republic (the Portuguese parliament) in an address at 2000 local time (1500ET, 2000GMT, 2100CET).

  • The report claims that the dissolution will not be imminent, with the publication of decrees coming after 29 November. This will allow the passage of the 2024 budget before an election takes place within 60 days.
  • If the president accepted the resignation of the PM by publishing the decree in the Diário da República it would entail not just Costa's resignation but that of the entire gov't The collapse of the gov't would mean all legislation fails, including the state budget and any bills relating to the EU's COVID-19 Recovery and Resilience Facility.
