President Castillo Vows To Stand Firm Against Political Persecution

  • Peru’s top prosecutor filed a complaint in congress against President Pedro Castillo for alleged corruption offenses, potentially supporting an ongoing campaign of opposition lawmakers seeking to remove him from office. (BBG)
    • “I want to signal that from this moment it’s the exclusive responsibility of congress to decide on the process of the constitutional complaint within the framework of the United Nations convention against corruption,” attorney general Patricia Benavides said in remarks streamed live on Facebook.
  • President Castillo said the constitutional complaint filed represents “a new modality of coup d’etat”, explaining he would “stand firm” despite the alleged “political persecution” against him by the National Prosecutor.
    • The president has ruled out seeking for political asylum.
