Chilean elections for members of Constitutional Assembly and Mayors were due to take place over the weekend. The postponement until May 15-16 was due to the rapid surge of Covid cases in Chile and has dramatically affected the President/Government approval ratings.

  • President Piñera's approval rating fell to a 2021 low of 14% last week.
  • Approval of the government's handling of the pandemic has fallen to 35%; 23% lower than the 58% registered in February.
  • The sharp turnaround followed a surge in approval as the country's vaccination campaign outshone its regional counterparts. Negative press surrounding Sinovac, crucial to the government's vaccine portfolio, may have further reversed sentiment.
