President Ramaphosa To Deliver Final SONA Before Elections

SOUTH AFRICA
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver his State of the Nation Address (SONA) at 17:00GMT/19:00SAST. The leader will take the opportunity to summarise the African National Congress' (ANC) track record during the 30 years since the end of apartheid as well as its achievements during the 5 years of the current administration, while also addressing the key challenges currently faced by the country. His spokesman yesterday played down the potential for the announcement of a date for this year's national and provincial elections, which will instead be unveiled within 15 days from the address. Today's SONA is the last one before the polls, with another one expected after the elections.
  • Standard Bank's Chief Economist Goolam Ballim estimated that the ANC has a 75% chance of losing its electoral majority in the upcoming elections, which includes a 65% chance that the party captures 45-50% of the vote. This comes after a number of opinion polls suggested that the ANC would struggle to retain its majority in parliament.
  • South Africa will release December manufacturing output data at 11:00GMT/13:00SAST.
