Primaries Tomorrow Will Provide Further Examination Of Trump's Influence

US

The next batch of primary elections take place in Maine, Nevada, North Dakota, and South Carolina tomorrow. The primaries will again test the strength of former president Donald Trump's endorsees against more moderate GOP candidates. Here are three races to watch:

  • South Carolina 1st District: Katie Arrington against Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC),
  • Nancy Mace represents the GOP establishment position on most issues. On foreign policy: "No American troops should set foot on Ukraine’s soil, however, to do that the United States must make good on its commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense."
  • Katie Arrington on the same issue: "I would not have voted for the $40 billion Ukraine aid bill. That bill is not only going to be paid by your children and grandchildren, but we borrowed money from China to fund it."
  • South Carolina 7th District: Russell Fry against Rep. Tom Rice (R-SC), one of the most vulnerable of the GOP Trump impeachers.
  • Nevada Secretary of State: Republican Jim Marchant is the next “MAGA” Republican to compete for a secretary of state position following the failed bid from Brad Raffensperger in Georgia last month. Marchant will again test the electability of Trump’s “big lie,” that the 2020 election was stolen, and take place the day after the January 6 Committee hearing examining the “big lie”.
  • Zach Montellaro of Politico: “The primary in Nevada is another reminder of the unusually high stakes in this year’s campaigns for election administration positions — longtime political backwaters that have gotten little attention in the past. But followers of former President Donald Trump — and his false claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him — have poured into secretary of state races in 2022, especially in the battleground states that will play a key role in deciding the next presidential contest.”
