PSOE Lead In Poll Ahead Of Regional Election

SPAIN

The centre-eft Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) has taken the lead in the latest CIS poll ahead of Sunday's electionm in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon.

  • Castille and Leon, seat projection, CIS poll: PSOE: 29-34 (+4/=), PP: 24-30 (-3/-2), VOX: 8-9 (+4/+1), UP: 2-4 (-1/-1), Cs: 2-5, UPL: 2-3. +/- vs. 7-22 January 2022. Fieldwork: 27 January-2 February 2022. Sample size: 3,918
  • Castille and Leon, CIS poll: PSOE: 30% (-1), PP: 30%, VOX: 11% (+2), Cs: 8%, UP: 7% (-2), UPL: 5% (+1), SY: 2%, EV: 2%. +/- vs. 7-22 January 2022, Fieldwork: 27 January-2 February 2022, Sample size: 3,918
  • This CIS poll sits as an outlier, with most showing the centre-right People's Party (PP) ahead. Despite being the second-largest party, the PP has governed with the centrist Citizens (Cs) for the past three years. However, with Citizens a declining force in Spanish politics, the PP could be forced into forming a gov't with the right-wing VOX if it wants to secure an overall majority.
  • The local election has national implications as well. PM Pedro Sanchez's PSOE has been at odds with its junior partner, the leftist Unidas Podemos over comments from a leftist minister regarding farming conditions in Spain. A poor result for the left in the Castile and Leon election could re-open these wounds between the governing parties.
