PSOE-Sumar Agreement Could Prove Moot If Catalan Support Not Forthcoming

SPAIN

An agreement between Acting PM Pedro Sanchez's centre-left Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and acting Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz's left-wing Sumar could prove moot should the pro-Catalan independence Together for Catalonia (Junts)'s support in an investiture vote not prove forthcoming. Sanchez and Diaz stated earlier that the two parties had reached an agreement on "a new progressive coalition government in Spain."

  • Wires report Diaz stating that the 'banking tax will be reinforced under coalition agreement' without giving further detail. Also states that 'companies' profits will be taxed 15% on accounting results.' The agreement also sees a reduction in the working week from 40 to 37.5 hours without a loss in salary.
  • As we noted earlier, there remain a number of sizeable obstacles to Junts' approval in an investiture vote being forthcoming. Junts' approval in an investiture vote would be required, rather than an abstention. Should the parties split along the same lines as in the previous vote on PP leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo, it would see the pro-Sanchez bloc with 171 votes to the anti-Sanchez bloc's 172, enough for Sanchez to lose both investiture votes.
