  • Putin-Biden video call set to take place today (1800 MSK time) amid strained ties in the first talks since Geneva in June. Leaders expected to discuss Ukraine, NATO’s eastward expansion, strategic stability and the bilateral agenda.
    • Putin is pushing for guarantees that NATO will not expand further East, while Biden is pressing for an end to aggression toward Ukraine and the removal of its 175k troops/weapons systems on the border. The Kremlin said it has low expectations for the initial meeting
  • Kremlin slams potential US sanctions against Putin’s inner circle as Western media hysteria following CNN reports that potential new sanctions may target Putin’s associates and disconnect Russia from the SWIFT system
  • Gas extraction from European UGS facilities in a cold November for Europe reached the highest level over the past five years – 11.2 bn cubic meters (vs 8.5bn in 2020). Given the current daily rate of withdrawal of gas reserves, there may not be enough until the end of the heating season, especially if it is cold in Europe.
    • As of December 4, European UGS facilities are filled by 66.78%, or about 69bncubic meters. This is about 22bn cubic meters less than a year earlier, and 18bn cubic meters less than the average for the last five years
