Putin In Kaliningrad; Spox Warns Of Militaristic Sentiments From Baltics

RUSSIA

President Vladimir Putin has arrived on a visit to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea, his first since September 2022. Kremlin spox Dmitri Peskov saidthat the trip should not be seen as sending 'a message' to NATO, stating "When the president visits the regions of the Russian Federation, this is not a message to the NATO countries. This is the main thing that the president does..."

  • Peskov went on to claimthat 'militaristic sentiments' from the Baltic States presented risks to the exclave. "The danger, of course, is present... a danger in strategic terms. Because you see what kind of militaristic sentiments are now in Europe - the neighboring Baltic states and so on. Countries that are permeated with Russophobic sentiments, which are drawing more and more military installations into their territory, just military, military equipment. This, of course, is all a danger; this requires additional measures so that the security of our country is reliably ensured,
  • In November 2023, British military intel reported that advanced S-400 missile defence systems were being moved from the exclave to the frontlines in Ukraine amid continued shortages of equipment. A less-well defended Kaliningrad could put the Kremlin on edge about the security of the area, which is separated from Russian troops deployed in Belarus by the 70km-long Suwalki Gap along the Polish-Lithuanian border.
