Putin/Macron Call Coming Up At 1200CET

EU-RUSSIA

The Elysee Palace has confirmed that French President Emmanuel Macron will hold a telephone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin at 1200CET (0600ET, 1100BST). This will be the first call between the leaders since 29 March, well before Macron's re-election in April.

  • The French president had previously refused a call from Putin in April in the aftermath of the Bucha massacre, but following a call between Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 30 April, the former's call to Putin was arranged.
  • Macron has been one of the primary EU interlocutors with Putin, a position that has earned him some criticism from Russia hawks within the EU and NATO.
  • Comes as the West seeks to push Russia to allow more wholesale humanitarian evacuations from Mariupol and in particular the besieged Azovstal steelworks.
