Putin May Travel to Turkey in April; Economic Confidence Falls

  • Erdogan said Russian President Vladimir Putin may travel to Turkey on April 27 to attend the inauguration ceremony of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, Hurriyet report. Erdogan said Turkey is determined to proceed with the nuclear power plant project, despite objection from the opposition. He noted that Putin may either travel to Mersin in person or attend via teleconference.
  • When asked about Russia's war on Ukraine at a joint conference with his Hungarian counterpart, President Erdogan said Ankara wanted to bring Moscow and Kyiv together to start negotiations and 'end the war with peace at the table', reiterating his stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
  • President Erdogan blames interest rate hikes for the turmoil in developed markets, saying monetary tightening risks dragging the global economy into recession, Bloomberg report. “[Europe’s] theory about high rates did not hold. Now they’re paying the price,” Erdogan said, speaking in an interview with AHaber TV. He added Turkey’s banking industry is providing “an example to the world” amid banking stress in the West.
  • Turkey's economic confidence fell to 98.82 in March from 99.05 in February, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute this morning.
  • The central bank will publish a summary of its March 23 MPC meeting at 1200BST/1400 local time. Meanwhile, President Erdogan will chair a National Security Council meeting while Education Minister Mahmut Ozer visits London.
