Putin Thanks Armed Forces, Shoigu Given Show Of Support

RUSSIA

Russian President Vladimir Putin has concluded his short address to military personnel in the Kremlin's Cathedral Square. The speech did not contain much new information on the situation in Russia, instead Putin used it as a display of thanks to the country's armed forces. One of the notable elements of the address was that Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu was in attendance in a conspicuous sign of support from Putin. The removal of Shoigu and other senior military figures was seen as a key aim of the Wagner mutiny, but it appears (on the surface at least) that the incident may have brought Putin and his defence minister closer together.

  • Putin: " You actually stopped the civil war, acted clearly and harmoniously." Says that the military pilots who died on 24 June 'honourably fulfilled their duty'.
  • Says that during the attempted rebellion, it "was not necessary to remove the combat unites involved in the special operation zone", i.e. call back troops from Ukraine.
