Putin to Address Federal Assembly Feb 29

  • TASS report that President Putin will address the Federal Assembly on Feb 29, citing the Kremlin press service. According to the Russian Constitution, the president "addresses the Federal Assembly with an annual report on the situation in the country, on the main directions of the state's domestic and foreign policy."
  • In a further sign of growing Russia-North Korea ties, North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency reported that President Putin gifted Kim Jong Un a Russian-made car for his personal use. The North Korean leader’s sister offered her thanks and said “the gift serves as a clear demonstration of the special personal relations between the top leaders,” KCNA said.
  • The Finance Ministry has not backed a proposal lobbied by online marketplaces and logistics services to keep the ceiling for duty-free imports of goods for personal use at EUR 1000, Vedomosti report, though no final decision has been made. The ceiling is set to drop back to EUR 200 as of April 1, and if this happens, the prices for imported goods that cost more than this figure could increase by 15-20%, the newspaper write.
  • Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov continues his trip to South America with a visit to Venezuela. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak speaks at an energy event in Moscow. There are no economic releases scheduled for today.
