Putin To Visit Armenia For CSTO Summit This Week

RUSSIA

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to travel to the Armenian capital, Yerevan, for a summit of Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) leaders on Wednesday 23 November. While the primary foreign and security focus of the Russian gov't remains the war in Ukraine, the CSTO is a key foreign policy and security forum for the Kremlin and making sure political ties with its national leaders is seen as crucial for the Putin gov't.

  • Putin is set to hold talks with Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan on the issue of the frozen conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.
  • The CSTO summit comes after Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, a close ally of Putin who relied on Russian support to put down mass protests at the start of 2022, won re-election comfortably in Kazakhstan's presidential election that took place over the weekend.
