Couple of reasons for the smaller miss in RPI relative to CPI

  1. Collection methods different: CPI collected through the month, RPI on individual day mid-way through the month. Normally this makes little difference, this month it was noticeable.
  2. Housing stock depreciation: Only included once a year and only included in RPI (not included in CPI).
Remember that the ONS publish warnings all over the official release about RPI not being a national statistic...
