FREIGHT

The attacks in the Red Sea have become increasingly dangerous in the last days and the level of threats have likely not peaked yet, CEO Vincent Clerc said.

  • “We’ve not seen the level of threat peak, to the contrary,” Clerc said.
  • “The amount or the range of weapons that are being used for these attacks is expanding and there is no clear line of sight to when and how the international community will be able to mobilize itself and guarantee safe passage for us,” he added.
  • Maersk has been diverting some cargo vessels via the Cape of Good Hope which adds a few weeks of journey time, he said.
  • “We will need to continue to work dynamically with the stakeholders that are providing the security, or working on providing that security coverage, to see when we’re feeling that the prerequisite is there for us to get back to the normal trading routes,” he said.
  • In late January, Maersk confirmed that two US-flagged vessels, the Maersk Detroit and the Maersk Chesapeake, were attacked in the Red Sea by Yemen’s Houthis.
