Rep Gallagher To Depart House Next Month, Shrink GOP Majority To 1 Vote

US

High-profile Republican Rep Mike Gallagher (R-WI), chair of the House Select Committee on China, will exit Congress on April 19, mirroring a surprise move from Rep Ken Buck (R-CO) who departs Congress today without seeing out his term. Both lawmakers reportedly cite similar frustrations with the politics of the chamber since the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy for leaving the Capitol.

  • When Gallagher departs, House Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-LA) majority will shrink to just one vote with no prospect of filling a seat until May.
  • The news comes as hardline conservative Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) filed a motion to vacate Speaker Johnson over his decision to work with Democrats to pass a FY24 minibus through the House.
  • It is unclear if there is sufficient GOP support for Greene's motion, but there are suggestions that she could activate it if Johnson decides to move a Ukraine aid bill when the House returns next month following a two-week recess. Some Democrats have indicated they will move to insulate Johnson from being removed.
