US

Chad Pegram at Fox News has reported comments from Republican debt limit negotiator Rep Patrick McHenry (R-SC) stating that he doesn't believe negotiators are in "the zone" to wrap up a deal today.

  • Pegram: "McHenry on if there’s a deal today: I don't think so we're not quite in that zone yet. I'm hopefully we can get things wrapped up.. everything is sensitive at this moment. Balance has to be struck and there's a lot more work that has to be done."
  • Earlier this afternoon, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) told reporters that he believes President Biden will “hold the line” and many of the spending cuts called for by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) will be stripped from a final House bill.
  • Across Washington at the Pentagon, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley has just told reporters that a US default would have "absolutely clear and unambiguous implications on national security."
  • Milley said a default would impact "military readiness" as well as "significant economic consequences."
