Republican Primaries Today To Test Former President Donald Trump Again

US

Georgia, Alabama, and Arkansas have primary elections today ahead of the midterm elections on November 8.

Georgia: Governor, Senate

  • Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and former House Rep. Stacey Abrams are the highest profile Democrats facing primary challenges today. They are both expected to win comfortably.
  • Trump has endorsed Herschel Walker in a bid to unseat Warnock. This race will be a 'must-win' for Democrats in November.
  • Incumbent Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) is facing Trump's endorsee David Perdue in the most followed race of the day. Perdue looks like coming up short in his challenge, a potentially significant loss for Trump considering the personal nature of the contest and the financial outlay from Trump. Politico: ‘For former President Donald Trump... a defeat here could further erase the sense of him as an untouchable GOP kingmaker.’
  • The Georgia secretary of state race is also notable: Trump endorsed Rep Jody Hice (R-GA) is challenging Republican incumbent Brad Raffensperger, the man who rejected Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election result.

Alabama: Governor, Senate

  • Trump originally endorsed Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) against Republican establishment backed Katie Britt in the Senate race. Trump rescinded the endorsement in March, apparently put off by poor polling numbers and a statement from Brooks suggesting that it was ‘time to move on’ from the 2020 election.
  • Brooks is now making a strong comeback in the polls, and has irritated Trump by continuing to tout the former president’s support.

Texas runoff election

  • The runoff in Texas will again showcase the struggle between the progressive and moderate wings of the Democrat party. Moderate Rep Henry Cuellar (D-TX) has the support of the Democrat establishment in his race with progressive immigration lawyer Jessica Cisneros. One to watch after big progressive wins in Democrat primaries in Oregon and Pennsylvania last week.
