Reuters: Ukraine Meets 2 Of 7 Conditions Required For Membership Negotiations

Reuters reporting that Ukraine has met two of the seven conditions required to begin negotiations on joining the bloc, with the EU executive set to release a report this week highlighting progress made by Ukraine despite Russia's invasion."

  • The report states that the EU granted Ukraine formal membership candidate status a year ago amid the Russian invasion, but, "set seven conditions - including on judicial reform and curbing endemic corruption - to launch accession negotiations..."
  • "Two senior EU officials who were briefed on the report, which has not been made public, said Ukraine has met two of the criteria by now. One of the officials said these related to judicial reform and media law..."
  • The source said: "There is progress. The report will be moderately positive. It's not about embellishing reality but recognising progress, there have been prominent anti-corruption cases to name, for example."
  • A more formal assessment is scheduled to take place in October with the 27 EU member states to have the final say. The prevailing view is that substantive progress is unlikely to made while Ukraine remains at war.
