Rhine Levels Dip First Time Since End May

COAL

Rhine river water levels at the Kaub measuring point dipped the first time on Thursday since 28 May, after heavy rainfall caused flooding in southern Germany, WSA data showed.

  • Rhine water levels at Kaub fell to 6.20m on Thursday, down from 6.36m on Wednesday.
  • However, levels remained well above the seasonal normal of 1.92m.
  • The Rhine river remained closed to cargo shipping around Maxau and Mannheim in south Germany on Thursday after heavy rains in the region, Reuters reported. WSA said shipping may resume on Friday with water levels dropping.
  • High waters can prevent travel for coal barges under some bridges.
  • API2 coal prices for July delivery are pulling back from highs earlier this month of 127 USD/MT on 3 June to trade at the lowest since 17 May. Recent gains were likely driven by higher natural gas benchmark prices in Europe, as European coal demand remained sluggish.
    • Rotterdam Coal JUL 24 down 2.6% at 112 USD/MT
