Right-Wing PVV Secures Strong Result, Attention Turns To Coalitions

NETHERLANDS

The Dutch general election on 22 Nov delivered a shock result, withGeert Wilders and his right-wing nationalist Party for Freedom (PVV) securing first place and sending shockwaves through the Dutch and wider European political landscape. Wilders, who has been a long-term fixture in Dutch politics having led the PVV since 2006, score his party's best ever result with a hard-line message on immigration. Partial results show the PVV winning 37 of 150 seats in the House of Representatives.

  • The alliance between the centre-left Labour Party (PvdA) and environmentalist GreenLeft (GL) led by former European Commission Exec VP Frans Timmermans came in second place with a combined 25 seats.
  • The centre-right Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), which has dominated Dutch politics over the past 13 years under outgoing PM Mark Rutte, won just 24 seats (down 10).
  • Lengthy coalition negotiations are essentially a given due to the large number of parties represented in the House (15). What could prove crucial as to whether the Netherlands ends up with a right-wing gov't involving the PVV or a more centrist administration is the stance of Pieter Omtzigt's New Social Contract (NSC).
  • The NSC entered parliament with 20 seats. Previously, Omtzigt has refused to countenance working with the PVV. However, given that Wilders' party has clearly emerged with a plurality, Omtzigt may be inclined to see trying to moderate the PVV from within gov't as more effective than allowing the largest party in parliament to loudly object from the sidelines throughout the gov'ts term.
