Ringgit Holds Steady Ahead Of BNM Rate Decision

Spot USD/MYR trades flat at MYR4.3828 as we type. Bulls see May 9 high of MYR4.3855 as their initial target and a break here would open up Apr 22, 2020 high of MYR4.4032. Bears look for a pullback under May 5 low of MYR4.3337.

  • Bank Negara Malaysia will announce its monetary policy decision today. It is the first meeting since the outbreak of the pandemic when analysts are divided as to whether the MPC will raise the Overnight Policy Rate. Most of them still expect the benchmark interest rate to remain unchanged - see our preview for more colour on the matter.
  • Looking further afield, Malaysia's Q1 BoP current account balance & GDP will hit the wires on Friday. The economy is expected to have grown 4.0% Y/Y in the three months through the end of March, according to Bloomberg consensus forecast.
