Risk Of Political Backlash After Attempted Shooting Of Vice President

ARGENTINA

Argentina could see a notable uptick in political tensions in the days and weeks ahead following the attempted shooting of Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner on the evening of 1 September.

  • In the incident, the vice president was returning home from court, where she is on trial for corruption. She greets supporters and has a gun pointed at her face at close range, but no shots are fired and the gunman (a 35-year old Brazilian) was apprehended. Initial reports suggest that the gun contained five bullets, but jammed or misfired.
