Romania CB Raises 2022 Inflation Forecast to 9.6.%

  • This morning, Romanian Central Bank raised its 2022 inflation forecast to 9.6% mainly due to the surge in energy prices, up from 5.9% the previous month.
  • The central bank now sees inflation at 3.2% by the end of 2023.
  • Romania central bank surprised the market this week and decided to raise its policy rate by 50bps to 2.50% in today's meeting (vs. 25bps expected).
  • It is the fourth time that RCB is hiking rates, its policy rate is now up 125bps since its low reached in 2021.
  • As for other CEE countries, inflationary pressures have remained elevated in Romania in the past year.
  • CPI inflation surged to 8.2% in December, its highest level since May 2011, diverging significantly from the central bank's 1.5%-3.5% target (chart below).
