Russia Calls On US Embassy To 'Stop Interfering In Internal Affairs'

US-RUSSIA

Russian state-run TASS reporting that according to a senior foreign ministry source source, the Russian gov't has sent a note to the US Embassy in Moscow demanding that it 'stop interfering in Russia's internal affairs.' Supposedly note states that US diplomats engaged in 'subversive work' in Russia will be expelled.

  • TASS reports that Russia is 'unhappy with the US Embassy's inappropriate remarks about Russian leadership' and that it 'spreads fake news about Russian armed forces'.
  • Comes shortly after Lynne Tracy took over as US Ambassador to Russia. While US-Russia relations are at a multi-decade low, they are still at the level of ambassadorial diplomacy.
  • A risk is that, like the Baltic States, Russia downgrades diplomatic relations to the level of charge d'affaires . This lower level of diplomatic contact risks miscommunication or misunderstanding between the two nations, in turn raising the prospect of miscalculation in anticipating the other's actions.
