Russia's LNG Output Key to Summer Global Supply Growth Amid Sanctions

LNG

Russia’s LNG output this summer is likely to be restrained by western sanctions but remains a key driver of global LNG supply growth this year according to BNEF.

  • Russian LNG production is forecast to rise by 13% summer-on-summer to 16.5m tons with the start-up of Arctic LNG 2 and higher utilization rates at Yamal and Sakhalin after extensive maintenance works last year.
  • LNG cargoes to China diverted via the Cape of Good Hope is adding shipping delays to the lack of tanker availability amid US sanctions.
  • US sanctions have delayed the delivery of the Arc7 ice-class tankers needed for cargo transportation while buyers are reluctant to take delivery of Russian gas.
  • Train 1 of Arctic LNG 2 project will only reach a utilisation rate of 24% at 1.6m tons in 2024 according to BNEF.
  • LNG exports from the Arctic LNG 2 facility are delayed and are likely to start in March at the earliest, said Novatek last month.
