Russian Coal Exports Soar On Weaker EU Legislation

Russia’s seaborne coal exports have neared the highest levels on record after the EU eased restrictions on transporting the commodity.

  • Shipments in October were almost 16.6 million tons -- just shy of the level in June, which was the highest since at least 2017 according to Kpler.
  • The EU revised guidance to support Russian coal flows to fight energy and food insecurity worldwide.
  • Europe is still not allowed to import Russian coal, but European companies are now allowed to ship the commodity to third countries.
