Russian For Min: Biden-Putin Summit Contingent On More US Sanctions

Russia's state-run RIA reporting comments from the Russian Foreign Ministry stating that the possibility of a bilateral summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Joe Biden would be contingent on more US sanctions.

  • Comes as Putin prepares to attend virtual climate change summit organised by President Biden (see 0909BST Emerging Market bullet).
  • A major factor here is the health of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny. Navalny has been transferred to a prison hospital due to his sharp deterioration in health due to a weeks-long hunger strike. Should Navalny die in prison, the US would very likely impose stricter sanctions on Russia, potentially eliminating the prospect of a bilateral summit to try to resolve tensions.
