S. Africa's Minerals Council Calls For Urgent Action On Transnet

  • South Africa's mining lobby (Minerals Council SA) has called on the Treasury to bail out Transnet amid troubles with shipping coal, noting that the volume of the commodity transported by road to various ports for export rose to record highs in 2023. Separately, President Cyril Ramaphosa admitted that urgent structural reforms in the logistics sector were needed and the government would look into those challenges. On the other hand, Moneyweb reported that coal export volumes railed to Richards Bay increased by 10% in 4Q23, even as the overall picture remained bleak.
  • The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have appealed the court's decision to ban several of its senior members from attending this week's State of the Nation Address (SONA). The lawmakers entered the stage during the 2023 SONA in an attempt to disrupt it, which resulted in a police intervention.
