S. African Trade Minister Flags Progress In AGOA Talks, Loadshedding Continues This Week

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The US and African nations have reached preliminary agreement on a 10-year extension to their trade pact, pending approval by the US Congress, according to South Africa's Trade Minister Ebrahim Patel. The preferential access of sub-Saharan countries to US markets under the African Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA) is currently set to expire in 2025. Meanwhile, IOL circulated a piece citing Michael Walsh, an expert with the Foreign Policy Research Institute, as warning that South Africa's stance on the Gaza situation poses a risk to a swift AGOA renewal.
  • Eskom said that "due to the slight improvement in generation performance and the adequate emergency reserves for the week ahead, Stage 2 loadshedding will be implemented [...] until 05:00 on Monday instead of Stage 3 as communicated earlier. Thereafter, Stage 3 loadshedding will be implemented from 05:00 on Monday until 05:00 on Thursday".
