Sanchez Expected To Offer Alternate View On Ukraine In Meeting With Biden

US-EU

President Biden is shortly due to welcome Spanish President Pedro Sanchez at the White House for a bilateral meeting likely to focus on Ukraine and migration.

  • A Spanish diplomatic source told Reuters: “While Madrid agrees with Washington on the illegality of Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Sanchez will convey the divergent views of China and Brazil and propose giving greater weight to the views of non-NATO nations hurt by the war.”
  • The meeting comes a day after the end of Title 42 and Biden and Sanchez are expected to discuss establishing migration hubs in Latin America.
  • The Hill reports that getting Spanish and Canadian cooperation on migration is a "huge boon for the White House" and reinforces the Biden administration’s argument that the US migrant crisis is a global problem.
  • The bilat will be the first White House meeting between the two leaders and comes shortly before Spain assumes the presidency of the Council of the European Union for the second half of 2023.
  • As has become commonplace in Biden’s White House, the leaders will not appear for a joint press conference.
