Free AccessScholz And Biden To Stake Out Response To China In White House Meeting
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US President Joe Biden are expected to discuss growing concerns over China's relationship with Russia during the Chancellor's visit to the White House tomorrow.
- Scholz's response to Russia has received mixed reviews: The initial German response was widely criticised by allies as insufficiently robust but Berlin has since stepped up the supply of lethal aid, facilitated the transfer of battle tanks, and pledged to increase defence spending.
- Tomorrow's meeting will likely focus on the response to China, should Beijing decide to provide lethal aid to Russia or engage in activities to aid Moscow in evading sanctions.
- In a hawkish speech to the German parliament today, Scholz criticsed the Chinese "position paper" on resolving the war and said: “My message to Beijing is clear: use your influence in Moscow to press for the withdrawal of Russian troops.”
- Scholz told China in his speech: “Do not supply weapons to the aggressor Russia,” but as Politico notes any move to impose sanctions on Beijing, "would particularly put Germany in a tight spot as it depends strongly on trade with China."
