Scholz's Approval Rating Craters Amid Protests Over Subsidies

GERMANY

Morning Consult reports that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's approval rating has continued to slide amid political turbulence from government plans to close a multi-billion euro hole in the federal budget, leading to a series of protests from German farmers over the suspension of subsidies and tax breaks.

  • Morning Consult notes: "Our most recent polling shows that nearly equal shares of German adults express support for right-wing party Alternative for Germany as for Scholz’ own Social Democrats."
  • The report continues: "Of equal concern is the fact that the largest share of German respondents say that no political party reflects their views, a likely indicator of political disillusionment which could further strengthen anti-establishment parties like the AfD."
