Scholz's SPD Falls Further Behind CDU As Ukraine Stance Criticised

Latest opinion polling from Wahlkreisprognose shows Chancellor Olaf Scholz's centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) falling 7% behind the main opposition centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the largest CDU lead since August 2021, prior to the federal election.

  • Wahlkreisprognose: CDU: 28% (+5.5), SPD: 21% (-6.5), Green: 19% (+2), AfD: 10% (=), FDP: 8.5% (-2), Linke: 5.5% (+1). Fieldwork: 1-3 Feb, Chgs w/15-18 Jan. 2,330 respondents.
  • While the German population and all major political parties remain staunchly opposed to Germany becoming militarily involved in the Ukraine crisis, with broad support for the ban on weapons exports to Ukraine, Scholz has come in for criticism for his "invisible" presence on the diplomatic stage.
