Schumer Sets 21 July Deadline For Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal

US

Lisa Desjardins at PBS tweets: "Schumer just announced he intends to file cloture on the vehicle for the bipartisan infrastructure bill Monday. That would mean the big procedural vote on infrastructure (would need 60) likely would be Weds. Schumer also has given his fellow Democrats until Weds to get on board the budget resolution outline."

  • "Now that is even less of a hard deadline b/c no vote is involved. BUT note that Schumer said he "intends" to file cloture Monday. He's giving everyone a bunch of wiggle room there. It's more of a deadline-ish than a real deadline-period. There is no infrastructure bill yet, FYI. Schumer knows almost nothing happens in the Senate without a deadline. So this is to spur the bipartisan Gang of 10 to get. the. deal. written."
  • As stated above, Schumer also sets next Wednesday 21 July as the deadline for Democrats to finalise the massive USD3.5trn infrastructure bill they hope to get through as a budget resolution via the reconciliation process, requiring just 50 votes rather than 60.
  • There remains no guarantee of 50 votes of Democratic support for the larger bill, with moderates such as Joe Manchin (D-WV) raising concerns about the impact of huge amounts of new gov't spending on the US economy.
