SCOTUS Nomination May Be Announced This Week

Several news sources including the Washington Post have speculated that President Biden's nomination for the vacant Supreme Court seat will be announced by the end of the week.

  • The White House has a self imposed deadline of February which puts the latest announcement at Monday.
  • Ketanji Brown Jackson is currently the clear favourite for nomination. Her nomination would give the court the requisite diversity but would also represent a continuity choice for the Biden administration as Jackson was a clerk for the outgoing Justice Breyer.
  • With Senate time in short supply Senate Majority Leader will also want a nominee who can gather some level of bipartisan support. Jackson confirmed to the Appeals Court with the support of three Republican senators last year.
  • Jackson has already undergone the vetting process and her nomination is expected to be smoother than the other two shortlisted candidates J. Michelle Childs and Leondra Kruger.
