SCOTUS Ruling On Student Loan Relief Could Comes As Soon As Today

US

A Supreme Court ruling on President Biden’s student loan relief programme could come when the court convenes at 10:00 ET 15:00 BST today. Any announcements will appear here LINK

  • The Guardian notes, "There’s no telling which decisions will actually come out, and the court has plenty of more obscure cases it’s considering, too. But even if they don’t issue their verdicts in those cases today, they’ll have another chance soon, since they’ve announced they could also issue decisions tomorrow.
  • Politico: “The president’s plan forgives up to $10,000 in federal student debt for borrowers, and doubles the debt relief to $20,000 for borrowers who also received Pell Grants... Six Republican-led states filed a legal challenge questioning whether the president, a Democrat, has authority to forgive the debt.”
  • The Hill reports that Senate Republicans are planning to unveil their a rival plan which consists of "five bills that the senators say will address the root causes of the student debt issue."
  • A Republican plan could pass the Senate if it wins the approval of two centrist Senators such as Joe Manchin (D-WV), Jon Tester (D-MO), or Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ), all of whom have expressed reservations about Biden’s programme.
