Second GOP Presidential Debate Unlikely To Slow Trump's Charge To Nomination

US

21:00 ET 02:00 BST: Seven Republican presidential candidates have qualified for the second GOP presidential debate taking place this evening in California. Former President Trump will again skip the debate to counterprogramme with a speech in Detroit. Livestream: Fox News

  • Appearing: Florida Gov. DeSantis (R-FL), Vivek Ramaswamy, former UN Ambassador Haley, former VP Mike Pence, former NJ Gov. Christie, Sen. Scott (R-SC), and ND Gov. Burgum (R-ND).
  • Observers will be watching to see if candidates take a more aggressive approach to Trump. There is also interest in positions on the UAW strike and on the prospect of a government shutdown.
  • Politico notes the prevailing view that the debates appear little more than a sideshow as Trump continues to increase his primary lead: “...the first Republican debate was entertaining... But in the end, [Trump] saw the biggest post-debate polling bump [and he] wasn’t even on the stage."
  • New York Times: “...there’s that much less reason to think this [debate] will make a big difference in the race. It might even add up to helping Mr. Trump, by splintering his potential opposition.”
