Second Release Of Fukushima Water Risks Escalating Tensions

(MNI) London - Japanese authorities have begun the second releaseof treated wastewater from the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, risking another escalation in tensions with other countries in the region. In the aftermath of the first water release in August, China banned the import of seafood from Japan, citing safety concerns. The Japanese gov't set up a USD141mn fund to aid the sector find new export markets as well as paying for gov't purchases and storage of seafood.

  • Japanese Agriculture Minister Ichiro Miyashita stated that he hoped the issue could be resolved amicably, “We are undecided whether to file a complaint (about China’s export ban) to the WTO immediately. At any rate, we hope to find a resolution within the WTO framework,”
  • This second release of wastewater is set to continue until 23 October.
