Secretary For Homeland Security Mayorkas Outlines Midterm Election Risks

US

US Secretary for Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas has outlined four security risks that his department is working to mitigate ahead of the US Midterm elections on 8 November, per Jeff Seldin at VAO News.

  • 1- Cybersecurity.
  • 2- Misinformation and disinformation from state and non-state actors including Russia, Iran, and China.
    • According to Mayorkas the risk is "both pre and post election...to undermine the perception of the integrity of the elections."
  • 3- Physical security.
    • Mayorkas says his department will provide physical security at voting stations and provide intelligence, training, and resources to election officials.
    • Mayorkas says: "We're really a critical partner" for state and local election officials.
  • 4. Domestic violent extremists.
    • Mayorkas says: "This is a threat that has increased dramatically. There's an "increasing level of antigovernmental sentiment" and "It is a very sad state of affairs when election officials are worried about their security."
