US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are expected to hold a call this morning to discuss Israel's response to Iran's ballistic missile attack. The call, the first between the two since August, may be particularly tense after revelations about their strained relationship were reportedly in an upcoming book by Bob Woodward.
- Biden is expected to counsel Netanyahu against striking Iran's nuclear or energy infrastructure out of fears of sparking a broader Middle East conflict and driving up energy prices close to the US presidential election.
- The call comes after Netanyahu vetoed Defence Minister Yoav Gallant's trip to Washington, D.C., where he was scheduled to discuss Iran with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and other US officials. The cancellation of that trip has increased concerns that Netanyahu may again ignore US advice on strategy, as he did before the Rafah invasion and ground operation in Lebanon.
- Axios notes that "U.S. officials said Biden and Netanyahu will also discuss the wars in Lebanon and Gaza. The White House declined to comment."
- Israeli strikes in Lebanon continued this morning, despite some market optimism that Hezbollah may be open to truce talks. Netanyahu said in a video message yesterday evening: “You have an opportunity to save Lebanon before it falls into the abyss of a long war that will lead to destruction and suffering like we see in Gaza,” calling on the Lebanese people to “take [their] country back” from Hezbollah.
