Republican US Senator from Alaska Lisa Murkowski has confirmed that she will seek a fourth term in office. This sets up a bitter primary contest against Kelly Tshibaka, a former head of the Alaska Department of Administration who has the vocal endorsement of former President Donald Trump.

  • Murkowski sits on the moderate wing of the Republican party and in February voted in favour of Trump's removal from office in the Senate trial following the storming of the Capitol. She is the only senator to have voted for Trump's removal from office to face election in 2022, with Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania retiring.
  • While Murkowski has the backing of a number of prominent Republicans, including Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), as well as moderate Democratic Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), Trump's endorsement of Tshibaka will likely lead to a fiercely contested primary in the Last Frontier state.
