Senate Leaders Clash On Debt Ceiling Stopgap Vote

• "Senate is IN: [majority leader Chuck] Schumer [D-NY] immediately urges GOP to join Democrats and back stopgap to prevent government shutdown that House cleared Tuesday. 'That is the bill that will be on the floor,' Schumer says as [minority leader Mitch] McConnell [R-KY] pushes one without language to extend federal borrowing authority.
• Schumer says allowing a federal default will wipe out huge amount of US household wealth. 'I can't think of a worse gut punch' to the American people,' Senate leader says, criticizing McConnell move he says is intended 'just to stick it to your political opponents.'
• McConnell attacks House-passed stopgap to prevent government shutdown for not carrying Israel missile defense money and extending Debt Limit. GOP leader, who holds noon press conference, says he and Appropriations ranking member [Richard] Shelby [R-AL] pushing CR without debt limit language"
