Senate Military Funding Vote Delayed

US

The Senate cloture motion on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA, the legislation that funds the US military for another 12 months) has been delayed according to majority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

  • Schumer: "This morning, we're continuing to work with our Republican colleagues to strengthen the [NDAA] substitute with as many amendments from senators as possible. We're making really good progress...We'll give the Armed Services Committee more time this morning to review the text and come to a final agreement."
  • The NDAA is usually passed easily by a wide bipartisan margin, given the crucual importance of its funding to national security. Delays to its passage, no matter how temportary, could be seen as indicative of how difficult it is to get bipartisan agreement within the polarised Senate at present.
