Senate Republicans Indicate 'Clean' NatSec Supplemental Could Clear Senate

US

Several high-ranking Republican Senators have indicated to reporters that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's (D-NY) 'clean' supplemental package could clear the 60-vote threshold required in a procedural vote later today.

  • Burgess Everett at Politico: "Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), the top Republican on defense issues, said he will vote to advance the borderless Ukraine/Israel/Taiwan supplemental and predicts there will be 60 votes to move it."
  • Frank Thorp at NBC notes: "[Senate Majority Whip] Sen Thune on if they’ll have 60 for the border-less supplemental aid bill: “We’ll see, stay tuned…”"
  • Schumer just delivered a speech on the Senate floor blaming former President Donald Trump for scuppering the bipartisan border deal which was attached to the supplemental as part of a USD$120 billion package.
  • A Senate vote on the full package, with the border provision included, will take place shortly. After the vote, which is expected to fail, Schumer will immediately call a vote on President Biden's USD$106+ billion supplemental which includes aid to Ukraine, Israel, the Indo-Pacific and other allies.
  • Should the bill clear today's vote, the Senate will likely postpone a recess and stay in session to hold a final vote later this week. If that vote succeeds, the bill will pass to the House where Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) will be under immense pressure from multiple angles after a series of high-profile failures.
  • Full analysis of the political machinations which led to the collapse of the border deal can be reviewed in today's MNI US Daily Brief.
