Senate Republicans Sceptical Of Biden Impeachment

US

House Republicans are expected to discuss the prospect of launching an impeachment inquiry into President Biden, over claims of financial misconduct, at a conference meeting today ahead of the August recess.

  • House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told Fox News on Monday: “This is rising to the level of impeachment inquiry," but yesterday clarified that an “Impeachment inquiry is not impeachment."
  • Any impeachment vote would certainly stall in the Democrat-controlled Senate and GOP Senators have questioned the wisdom of such a move. Senator John Thune (R-SD), the number-two Republican in the chamber said: “I think the best way to change the presidency is win the election." Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT), who voted to impeach Trump, said: “The bar is high crimes and misdemeanours, and that hasn’t been alleged at this stage.” Senator John Barrasso (R-WY): “I think people don’t want Kamala Harris to take over.”
  • A concession on an inquiry, a key demand of the House Freedom Caucus, may be politically expedient for McCarthy as he attempts to legislate FY2024 appropriations bills in the face of robust opposition from a conservative bloc who have hinted at an openness to a government shutdown.
