Centrist Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) has left the Democratic Party and filed as an independent citing, "partsian extremism."
- Manchin, who previously announced he won't run for re-election, has teased the possibilty of an indepedent presidential bid and a run for the vacant West Virginia governor seat of Gov. Jim Justice (R-WV) - who is widely expected to win Manchin's Senate seat in November.
- Considering the deep-red lean of WV, should Manchin decide to run for Senate re-election as an independent, he may have a slightly better chance of retaining the seat without Democrat affiliation. However, Justic will remain the strong favourite.
- Manchin's affiliation change will not affect Democrat control of the Senate as will likely continue to caucus with Democrats until the election. But, if he were to caucus with the GOP, Vice President Kamala Harris would cast the tiebreaking vote per her authority as President of the Senate - maintaining Democrats' control of the chamber.
- Macnhin: "Today, our national politics are broken and neither party is willing to compromise to find common ground... To stay true to myself and remain committed to put country before party, I have decided to register as an independent with no party affiliation and continue to fight for America's sensible majority."
- Manchin's exit from the Democratic Party accerlates a trend of moderates departing Congress. Senator Krysten Sinema (I-AZ) similarly switched allegience mid-term and decided not to run for re-election. Republican Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) has also declined to run for re-election.
