Source Report Suggests President Duda May Meet With Donald Trump This Week

POLAND

Poland's President Andrzej Duda will meet with former US President and current presidential hopeful Donald J. Trump during his visit to New York this week, according to a source report circulated by Wirtualna Polska (WP.pl).

  • Sources from the Presidential Palace told WP that Duda wants to secure a "soft landing" for himself in one of the international institutions when his term expires in 2025, amid his conviction that Trump will win the upcoming US election.
  • One of Duda's top aides refused to rule out such a meeting, despite admitting that it is not on the official agenda. He said that the two leaders "have known each other personally for many years" and "have stayed in touch."
  • There was speculation that Duda could meet with Trump during his recent joint trip to the US with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, but this eventually didn't come to fruition, with Polish media pointing to informal pressure from the US side.
  • Duda repeatedly stressed his cordial relations with Trump and portrayed him as a rational, business-oriented leader, who could be persuaded to uphold US support for Eastern Europe amid a growing geopolitical threat posed by Russia.
  • Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tusk took several opportunities to publicly criticise the former US President for undermining the unity of NATO and his controversial comments on Russia and its invasion of Ukraine.
