South Korean President Yoon To Visit Japan Next Week

SOUTH KOREA

South Korea President Yoon will reportedly travel to Japan next week (16-17th of March) and meet with Japan Prime Minister Kishida in a sign of mending ties between the two countries.

  • This will be the first visit of a South Korean President to Japan in 4 years. Leaders will also resume reciprocal visits for the first time in 12 years. Renewed sharing of military information is also possible, although local wires report no timing on this has been agreed at this stage (see this Bloomberg link for more details). Reducing trade restrictions is also likely to be on the agenda.
  • This trip followed earlier reports in the week around plans to resolve disputes over forced labor issues.
  • US President Biden welcomed steps for improved relations between the two countries.
